Small Kitchen Renovation: Ideas, Tips & What It Costs in NZ

If you’re planning a small kitchen renovation, the two questions we hear most from homeowners across Taupo and Hawke’s Bay are “what will this actually cost?” and “how do I make this space work harder without a full rebuild?”

Here’s a realistic breakdown of both.

Small kitchen renovation cost in NZ

Costs vary depending on scope, but as a general guide for a small kitchen (roughly 6–10m²):

  • Basic refresh — new hardware, paint, a new tap and splashback, keeping cabinetry and layout as-is: under $10,000–$15,000
  • Basic renovation — new pre-made cabinets, laminate benchtop, basic appliances, same layout: around $16,000–$25,000
  • Mid-range renovation — new cabinetry, upgraded benchtop (including stone), better appliances, same footprint: $25,000–$40,000
  • High-end small kitchen — bespoke joinery, stone benchtops, premium appliances: $40,000+

The single biggest cost lever in a small kitchen renovation is whether you keep your sink, oven and dishwasher in their current positions. Moving plumbing or gas lines can add $2,000–$5,000 or more, and may trigger the need for building consent. If budget is the priority, keeping the existing layout and upgrading finishes is by far the most cost-effective path.

Bench for bench, small kitchens can actually make a stone benchtop more affordable than you’d expect — less lineal metreage means the material cost is naturally lower than in a large kitchen, so it’s often within reach even on a modest small kitchen renovation budget.

Where to spend, where to save

Spend on:

  • The benchtop. In a small kitchen, the benchtop does a lot of visual heavy lifting — it’s often the largest single surface in the room. A quality stone benchtop lifts the whole space and, because there’s less of it to cover, it’s rarely the budget-breaker people expect.
  • Storage that fits the space exactly. Off-the-shelf cabinetry rarely uses every centimetre of a small kitchen well. Custom or semi-custom joinery — pull-out pantries, corner units, drawers instead of cupboards — makes a genuinely bigger difference in a small kitchen than a large one.
  • Lighting. Task lighting under cabinets and a well-placed pendant over any bench space make a small kitchen feel considerably bigger and easier to work in.

Save on:

  • Layout changes. Unless your current layout is genuinely unworkable, keep sink, stove and fridge roughly where they are.
  • Appliance upgrades you don’t need. Match appliances to how you actually cook rather than upgrading everything to the top of the range.
  • Structural changes. Removing a wall to “open up” a small kitchen sounds appealing but adds significant cost and consent requirements — a well-designed small kitchen doesn’t always need it.

Small kitchen renovation ideas that make the space work harder

Go for a single-wall or galley layout. These layouts use the least floor space while keeping your work triangle (fridge, sink, stove) tight and efficient — ideal for compact Hawke’s Bay villas and Taupo townhouses.

Add a slim island or peninsula instead of a full island. An I-shape island or a peninsula gives you extra bench space and casual seating without needing the floor area a full island demands.

Use pale, non-porous surfaces to keep the room feeling open. Light-coloured engineered stone benchtops and splashbacks reflect more light and make a compact kitchen feel airier, while staying practical for everyday cooking.

Cabinetry to the ceiling. Extending overhead cabinets all the way up removes the dust-catching gap above and adds meaningful extra storage — useful in a small kitchen where every cupboard counts.

Pull-out and drawer storage over fixed shelving. Deep drawers with organisers for pots, pans and utensils make better use of corner and base cabinet space than traditional shelving, especially in a tighter footprint.

A small kitchen renovation done properly, without the full-size price tag

Because our team designs, builds cabinetry and manufactures our own stone benchtops in-house, we can scope a small kitchen renovation efficiently — without the added cost and time of coordinating multiple outside suppliers. That’s often what makes a stone benchtop and better joinery achievable on a small kitchen budget, not just a large one.
